Food

  • Wet/Raw

Our cats and kittens eat mostly wet or raw food, with the occasional Farmina brand kibble. Our cats eat sardines, chicken from our own farm, beef from our neighbor’s cows, tuna (only very occasionally though as canned tuna contains mercury), wild caught salmon, eggs from our farm, my homemade yogurt from local, raw milk and a probiotic mixed in (usually FortiFlora brand). Please never feed your cat pasteurized dairy as they cannot properly digest it. If you only have access to pastuerized yogurt then please make sure it is full fat or Greek. Make sure to give your cat supplements as well: taurine, lysine, probiotics & dry pumpkin are good ones.

Siberians thrive on wet food. Feed them wet or raw food 2-3x a day, and dry food only once a day. If they have too much dry food, they are likely to get an upset stomach. Too much kibble can also lead to a variety of health problems. Cats in the wild eat a lot of raw meat and have evolved on farms all over the world, eating raw eggs and raw dairy. It is always best to feed them as close to what they would eat in the wild as possible. Here are some helpful and informative articles below on the benefits of a raw feline diet:

    The Little Carnivore Blog

For a raw diet to be balanced it is crucial to ensure that your kitten or adult cat is receiving the required nutrients and vitamins for proper development and thriving health. Kittens need: 75% muscle meat, 15% organs, 10% bone. Adult cats need 80/10/10.

For ease and convenience you can also just subscribe to Darwin’s Natural Raw and have a complete and nutriitious raw diet for your cat delivered straight to your door. I have heard very good things about Darwin’s Natural raw subscription.

Stella&Chewy’s is another good option for a complete raw diet delivered straight to your door.

An amazing resource for the feline raw diet is the Facebook group called: Cats Completely Raw And Proud (Cat CRAP). Go to the Files section for an in-depth list of informative resources.

If you wish to use a different type of diet, you should gradually transition to a specific brand by mixing in a small amount of new food on day one, increasing the amount of new food over 7 days’ time until transition is complete. Failure to provide the food your kitten is accustomed to during the first several days in its new home can result in upset stomach, diarrhea, weight loss and/or constipation, which can lead to other, more serious health issues.

  • Dry/Kibble

Our cats eat grain-free kibble. Cats do not eat grains in the wild and cannot digest it. Most kibble on the market is very processed and can lead to health issues in your cat. Please only give grain-free dry food to your Siberian cat. We use this grain-free kibble by Farmina — it can be found on Amazon and Chewy as well.

  • Supplements

The following are good supplements to integrate into your cat’s diet: Purina FortiFlora Probiotic, and Bene-Bac Plus Prebiotic Powder.

Taurine, lysine, probiotics & dry pumpkin are crucial supplements for a cat on a raw diet. Talk to your vet about what feline supplements they like and recommend.

Food Dishes & Water Fountains

  • Stainless Steel Water Fountain

Running water is healthier for cats and encourages them to drink more often which is important because cats tend to not drink enough water, leading to feline dehydration. I highly recommend getting a cat water fountain, especially a stainless steel one. Here is an affordable option off Amazon that my cats like: Stainless Steel Water Fountain

  • Veken Cat Fountain

Another good water fountain: Veken Cat Fountain

  • Cat Dishes

Cats develop “Whisker Fatigue” if they eat out of bowls, this is due to their whiskers touching the sides of their food bowl. Please use flatter dishes like plates. Ceramic and stainless steel is best. Here is a cute set: SOCOSY Cat Dishes

  • Cat Dishes

Here is a stainless steel option: Stainless Steel Cat Dishes

Litter Boxes & Litter

  • Litter Robot

Litter Robot I cannot recommend a Litter Robot enough. You never have to scoop litter with this. It is extremely quiet when cycling, detects any weight of cat, so kittens can use this, and it is Wi-Fi enabled. There are some off-brand alternative options to this one but I highly recommend investing in the Litter Robot brand, as it is the best: Litter Robot

  • Dr Elsey Litter

Please use a clumping unscented litter in your Litter Robot or any litter box that you use. For my litter robots I only use the Litter Robot brand litter now. After trying several different brands, I discovered that there was some litter clumping to the sides of the machine and other annoyances. The Litter Robot brand is incredible, and I have had zero issues since switching to their brand. This is a great affordable option too: Dr Elsey Litter

  • Tidy Cats Litter

Here is another good option: Tidy Cats Clumping Unscented Litter
